Wow! I was blown away when the workers arrived on the site to begin digging the foundation! I had hoped every day that they would start, but since it has been raining for three weeks there was no chance. But suddenly we had a sunny afternoon and voila! Three workers appeared and immediately started up the digger and laid out the plans on a table and away they went!

I still can’t believe that this house is really going to get built! After waiting 8 years and with one problem after another it seems a miracle. Even the neighbors  call it a wonder! Here’s me with the second board announcing the construction site. Notice the year!

One funny thing; the man who lives right next to me owns the fanciest hotel and restaurant in town (in fact his restaurant has a Michelin star) and he has raced past my abode in his Jaguar, creating clouds of annoying dust, for 8 years but has never said hello. As soon as the build started he stopped his Jag, opened the window and called out ‘Finally!” Hahaha.

After two hours they had made a good start with the dig. The topsoil in one pile and the rocks in another.

The build has officially begun!

This is so exciting! I finally have the idea that after all the years of waiting the house really will be built and I can live in it!

My son was so surprised to see that instead of a computer program they are using old-fashioned paper plans. Whatever works…

This is the very beginning of digging the foundation.
Dit is het begin van het graven.
A second video

They are using the little digger that they are realizing is not up to the job. Just about one meter down they have encountered solid rock. Not surprising in this area of Perigord. Anyway, they are doing as much as they can – and I think it is super impressive! Tomorrow they will bring a rock breaker!
