If anyone thinks they have their land to themselves I am here to tell you that you are mistaken. Especially at night you are not alone. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so today I will be silent except for identifying my nocturnal guests.

These guys are ferocious-looking but generally run away from people. They tear up your garden, eat everything and can even burrow under your fence. Plus they sound like angry grandfather pigs!

These deer look magnificent but they will eat all the leaves off your fruit trees. In another post I’ll show how we protect the trees.

These bunnies are so fast they can dart over electric wire and not even notice. That is how they ate every single vegetable in my garden in one night!

This bird is even called The Dordogne. Gorgeous creatures who eat only red fruit. They didn’t touch my cassis berrie or my yellow raspberries, but bye-bye red raspberries!

I have seen these foxes during the day as well. Boy can they run! If you blink, you’ve missed him.

Lovely photos Skye. Less lovely habits of these animals, especially where your produce is concerned, but everyone has to eat!
We came across a wild boar mother and two babies whilst walking in Sicily a few years ago. Apparently the sows will fiercely defend their young if feeling threatened; she was right in the middle if the path in front of us… earlier in the same walk we had acquired a canine companion who kind of adopted us. The dog ran towards the boar family, leaping out of the way into the surrounding bushes, pursued by the sow and we could hear the barks and grunts moving away in the distance. We legged it up the path on our way and left the commotion behind us. Protection comes from many sources and in many forms, but we felt very grateful to our canine friend.
